Bipartisan Congress members have reintroduced the Fair Labels Act, a bill aiming to prohibit plant-based and cultivated protein products from using meat-like terms such as ‘meat’ or ‘beef’ on their labels. Senators Pete Ricketts and John Fetterman, along with Representatives Mark Alford, Mike Flood, and Buddy Carter, are sponsoring this legislation. The bill seeks to amend existing federal acts to ensure consumers can distinguish between conventional meat and alternative proteins. Supporters, including the beef industry, argue that current labeling creates consumer confusion and harms American farmers. If passed, the bill would mandate clear differentiation and disclaimers indicating these products are not derived from live animals. This effort follows previous unsuccessful attempts and contrasts with FDA guidance, which allows some descriptive terms for plant-based alternatives.
