The United Kingdom has invested over £320 million to establish itself as a leader in novel food technologies, including lab-grown meat. However, the Alternative Proteins Association warns that ongoing negotiations to align the UK with European Union single market rules threaten this progress. Critics argue that adopting EU regulations would replace the current, more flexible UK framework with a slower and more restrictive system. This shift risks undermining the Food Standards Agency’s Cell-Cultivated Products Sandbox, a programme designed to approve new food technologies by 2027. Industry representatives report that investors are already showing signs of hesitation due to this regulatory uncertainty. The association is calling for novel foods to be excluded from these trade negotiations to preserve the UK’s competitive advantage and maintain its status as a hub for food innovation.
