Tufts University researchers are studying how the shift to cellular agriculture could impact farmers, meatpacking workers, and communities in the conventional beef industry. The project aims to understand potential disruptions and opportunities, focusing on regions with significant beef production. Researchers will conduct interviews and surveys to gauge attitudes across the livestock industry, considering marginalized groups and systemic inequities. They will use Social Life Cycle Assessment to evaluate working conditions, business viability, and livelihoods throughout the supply chain. The goal is to guide solutions that minimize negative impacts while maximizing benefits of cultivated meat, ensuring a just transition that supports sustainability and social equity in the food system.
