Montana and Indiana have become the latest US states to ban cultivated meat, joining a growing list of states restricting the alternative protein. Montana’s HB 401, signed by Governor Greg Gianforte on May 1, prohibits production and sale. Indiana’s HB 1425, signed by Governor Mike Braun, imposes a two-year moratorium (July 2025–June 2027) with fines up to $10,000 and mandates labelling cultivated meat as “imitation.” Both bills passed with strong Republican support, reflecting broader resistance to alt-proteins despite scientific consensus on their sustainability.
