The Cell-Cultivated Products (CCP) Sandbox Programme, launched in March 2025 and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, is a two-year collaborative effort involving scientists, regulators, academics, and industry leaders (including participants like Hoxton Farms, Blue Nalu, and Mosa Meat) to develop the regulatory framework for cultivated meat in the UK, where no such products are currently authorized for sale. The initial safety guidance issued by the programme confirms that CCPs derived from animal cells are classified as products of animal origin, meaning businesses must comply with existing food safety regulations. Furthermore, the guidance addresses the requirements for allergenicity assessments and the evaluation of nutritional quality as part of the approval process, ensuring that these innovative foods meet the same rigorous safety standards as conventional foods, as stated by Dr. Thomas Vincent of the FSA.
