German startup Bluu has scaled up production of its cultivated fish cells to an industrial level, partnering with Dutch firm Cultivate at Scale. They have utilized 1,000-litre bioreactors and claim to be the first to produce cultivated marine ingredients in 10,000-litre bioreactors. While Bluu initially focused on seafood, it has diversified into the personal care sector, including skincare and health products, due to quicker market entry compared to the food industry. This expansion, combining Bluu’s expertise in salmon and trout cells with Cultivate at Scale’s infrastructure, aims to achieve substantial cost reductions. Bluu’s long-term plan still includes the food sector, but its development is currently on hold as the company focuses on becoming an ingredient supplier for personal care.
