Research suggests that, by 2060, 85% of India’s protein production must come from novel and traditional plant-based sources if the country is to decarbonise. Its current pledge of net zero by 2070 is wildly off-target, with emissions expected to double instead by 2040. To help the nation on its protein transition path and meet its climate ambitions, a wave of startups and facilities are innovating with alternative proteins, which represent a burgeoning industry in India. But these startups need help, as a report released last week by think tank the Good Food Institute (GFI) India and Bengaluru’s IKP Knowledge Park suggested.
