The Hungarian parliament has passed a law banning the production and distribution of cell-cultivated meat, with supporters arguing that the products are potentially unsafe, pose unanswered questions, and that the food technology threatens traditional values, an important part of the “European way of life.” The ban, which does not include plant-based faux meats, follows similar concerns raised by Hungary during its European Council Presidency and aligns with moves by countries like Italy, which also banned cultivated meat in 2023. Critics, such as The Good Food Institute, have condemned the decision, arguing that it is based on “unfounded fears and protectionist arguments” rather than objective science and sets a dangerous precedent by prioritizing politics over innovation for a more sustainable food system.
