The Japanese government, under Prime Minister Takaichi, launched a new Growth Strategy Headquarters focused on strengthening the nation’s supply structure through “crisis-management investment” in 17 strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and food tech. Significantly, this marks the first time that food tech has been designated as an independent national strategic sector, placing it on the same level as AI within a prime-minister-led framework, moving it beyond individual ministry initiatives. This strategic focus aims to strengthen food security and establish sustainable production systems using advanced technologies like cultivated meat and food robots, a decision widely viewed as a “historic turning point” that officially recognizes food tech as a core industry vital to Japan’s national and economic security. The government plans to finalize this overarching Growth Strategy by the summer of 2026, with each responsible minister tasked with creating a detailed “public–private investment roadmap” outlining investment timelines and quantitatively demonstrating the expected economic impact.
