While the Good Food Institute (GFI) Europe has welcomed the European Commission’s new Biotech Act for its potential to streamline the commercialization of technologies like precision fermentation, the organization expressed disappointment over the exclusion of novel foods from proposed regulatory sandboxes. The Act aims to boost EU competitiveness by providing startups with clearer guidance and better-resourced support from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), a move GFI believes will reduce authorization delays and support green growth. However, GFI argues that barring novel foods from the sandbox scheme—a controlled environment for designing new standards—is a “missed opportunity” to foster innovation and consumer confidence. To address these gaps, GFI is calling for the inclusion of all food categories in future sandboxes and advocating for increased investment in food biotechnology to enhance the EU’s food security and sustainability.
