Italian researchers have launched a petition seeking public support to overturn Italy’s 2023 ban on cultivated meat. They call for unrestricted research, EU food safety scrutiny, political decisions on admissibility, and consumer choice. The petition cites a detailed position published in a scientific journal. Italy’s ban has been called “unenforceable” by the EU Commission, which deemed a similar Hungarian ban “unjustified”. A coalition of EU countries led by Italy has also asked the EU to reconsider its novel foods approval process for cultivated meat products.
