India’s cultivated meat industry has received a significant boost with the opening of the country’s first animal stem cell biobank at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) in Hyderabad. Funded by the government, the new biobank will provide high-quality stem cells and culture media to research institutions and industry, with a focus on cultivated protein production. This initiative aligns with the government’s BioE3 policy, which promotes a knowledge-based livestock health solutions and aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of new technologies. The biobank is the latest development in India’s growing future food economy, which also includes the establishment of alternative protein centers, ongoing work on a regulatory framework for novel foods, and the first public tasting of cultivated meat by Biokraft Foods.
