The European Parliament is considering a proposal to restrict the use of meat-related terms like “burger,” “steak,” and “sausage” on plant-based products. This initiative, championed by French MEP Céline Imart and supported by the Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to prevent consumer confusion, protect traditional farming, and uphold European culinary heritage. A key argument for the ban is that these labels should be exclusively for products made from “real meat.” A similar but less restrictive proposal was also put forth by the European Commission. The matter is expected to be brought before the full Parliament in October.
