Lucid Automation and Security worked with a San Francisco-based cell-cultured meat pilot plant to create a “dim factory” model, which combines extensive automation with a reduced human workforce. They implemented a “bolt-on data integrity stack” using rugged mobile hardware and software like Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk Historian and Aveva’s PI Vision to provide live dashboards and historical data without altering the plant’s existing infrastructure. By capturing key parameters like temperature and pH and training the plant’s engineers, this two-month project laid the foundation for future automation, leading to achievements such as higher uptime, tighter control, and reduced energy consumption, ultimately moving the facility closer to a fully autonomous, lights-out manufacturing model.
