Indian precision fermentation startup StrainX Bioworks has exited stealth mode after securing $13 million in funding. The company, founded by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi alumni, focuses on producing high-value nutritional ingredients and alternative proteins using synthetic biology. Operating with over 100 employees, the firm manages a 10,000-litre fermentation facility in Bhopal and plans to scale capacity to 100,000 litres. StrainX Bioworks has already self-affirmed one of its molecules under the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Generally Recognized as Safe provision and is currently seeking regulatory approvals in India. The company functions as a business-to-business provider, partnering with global food manufacturers to supply ingredients. By maintaining internal control over its manufacturing processes and leveraging India’s cost advantages, the startup aims to achieve price parity with conventional food products.
