The Good Food Institute (GFI), a nonprofit focused on promoting plant-based and lab-grown meat alternatives, has laid off six employees and eliminated seven vacant positions in its US team due to persistent financial shortfalls. The organization, which relies on donations, has spent more than it raised in recent years, drawing on reserves to cover the gap. Interim CEO Rachel Lichte announced the cuts, which affect about 5% of the US team’s 110 employees, along with the resignation of senior VP Sheila Voss. GFI stated these measures aim to stabilize its finances while continuing its mission. The layoffs were limited to the US team, with affiliate offices abroad making independent staffing decisions. GFI acknowledged ongoing challenges in fundraising, despite strong donor interest in its climate and food security goals. The organization remains optimistic about future funding opportunities, including potential support from tech philanthropists and policy shifts in the US.
