Dr. Mohamad Hafizi Abu Bakar, a bioprocess technology lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia, sampled lab-grown unagi (eel) produced by Cell AgriTech Sdn Bhd in Penang. Despite initial skepticism about its plastic-like appearance, the taste matched conventional unagi, a promising step for Malaysia’s cultured meat industry. Malaysia’s first R&D lab, Cell AgriTech, grows meat from animal stem cells in bioreactors, replicating DNA-identical protein without traditional farming. Cultured meat could mitigate overfishing, supply chain vulnerabilities, and climate-driven fishery collapses, positioning Malaysia as a regional leader in sustainable protein.
