Merck has partnered with company builder mantro GmbH to launch a new deep-tech spinout called EdiMembre, which will focus on commercializing Merck’s edible membrane technology for the alternative protein industry. This technology enables the creation of complex tissue structures for scalable cultivated meat production and has also been used in plant-based pasta applications. Led by former Merck employees and headquartered in Massachusetts, EdiMembre has already developed countertop edible hollow fiber bioreactors and has secured $400,000 in pre-seed investment from various investors. Merck will provide its intellectual property, expertise, and cell culture media to the new company, which aims to drive change in sustainable food production.
