Israel-based Believer Meats has become the first non-US startup to gain full regulatory approval to sell its cultivated chicken in the United States, following the completion of the process with the USDA, months after receiving a ‘no questions’ letter from the FDA. This dual clearance from the FDA and USDA allows the company, formerly Future Meat Technologies, to begin commercial production and sales from its newly completed, world’s largest cultivated meat facility in North Carolina. Believer Meats produces its chicken using spontaneously immortalized fibroblast cells in bioreactors, which are then harvested and can be mixed with plant-based ingredients to create products like chicken breast, with the company claiming its technological advances can bring the cost in line with conventional USDA organic chicken.
